Art may be the most widely-spoken universal language that exists. And the thriving street art scene in a countless number of cities confirms it. Street art around the world gives phenomenal insight into the cities I visit. From general statements to visually-depicted political manifestos, street art speaks.

portugal
The grittiness of Porto is beautifully displayed through its epic murals. Set along side the iconic blue and white tiled buildings, the street art lends an interesting quality to the city.

guadeloupe
The small island territory of Guadeloupe was such a pleasant surprise. Sainte-Anne, a coastal city on Haute Terre, did not disappoint in terms of street art. Side note – you can clearly tell by these photos which of these trips were solo and which were not – hah!

italy
While Rome will never be one of my favorite cities, it (alongside Paris) has one of my top displays of street art around the world. I love that the street art here blends seamlessly with the city’s antiquity and preserved history.

bermuda
There’s no shortage of street art in the capital city of Hamilton, Bermuda. While you’re there, check out one of the city’s many galleries, representative of a thriving art scene.

hungary

Alright, the graffiti below isn’t on the street. It’s in some bathroom of a bar. There’s pretty neat art in the ruin bars as well, if we’re talking about things indoors!

spain / catalonia

OK, so the roof below isn’t street art per se, but I love it so much, I had to include it!
slovakia
Though I wasn’t in Kosice long, most of my time there was spent looking at art – both in the streets and in museums.

usa
I don’t travel much in the USA, so my selections here are exclusively from New England and New York. However, I’m willing to bet that cities like LA, Austin, San Francisco, Denver, and Portland are pretty impressive!

austria
I never expected to include Vienna on this list. Vienna is a picture-perfect city with virtually no trash, white-washed buildings, and citizens who care about preserving its beauty. But the city surprised me with its impressive street art. Below are just a couple of examples!

dominican republic
If you’re venturing outside of your resort, be sure to check out some of the epic murals of bad-ass women (all seemingly adorned with a full set of curlers) that decorate the streets of Punta Cana.

france
Street art in Paris is some of the best in the world, in my opinion. As a major city that’s played an enormous role in the events of world history, Paris has stories. Many, many stories. And you don’t have to read French to understand them.

ireland

canada
The Montreal street art scene is no joke. These photos barely scratch the surface. A lost SDI card is to thank for my poor representation below.

germany

I had to include at least one piece by Banksy! (above)

mexico
